Urinary tract infections in adults : a guideline-based management

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are frequent, especially in women. The increase in antibiotic resistance and changing epidemiological profiles require the recommendations to be regularly updated. This article reviews current guidelines for the management of uncomplicated and recurrent UTIs, taking into account recommendations from the European Association of Urology (EAU), the Association Française d'Urologie (AFU) and the American Association of Urology (AUA). While uncomplicated UTIs are generally treated with fosfomycin, nitrofurantoin or Cotrimoxazole, complicated UTIs require urine culture and often imaging, depending on their clinical presentation. The importance of precise targeting of treatments and preventive measures to limit bacterial resistance is underligned.
