Result of phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation combined with trabeculectomy in the treatment of glaucoma with cataract
Objective: The study was designed to investigate the application of Phacoemulsification and Intraocular Lens Implantation combined with Trabeculectomy (Phaco & IOL & T) for glaucoma with cataract.
Methods: "Phaco & IOL & T" was performed on 45 eyes of 45 patients in comparing with the treatment of Extra Capsule Cataract Extration and Intraocular Lens Implantation combined with Trabeculectomy (ECCE & IOL & T) on 40 eyes of 40 patients. The average period of follow-up was six months.
Results: The average Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP) in "Phaco & IOL & T" group was 2.08 kPa, astigmatism was 0.84 +/- 0.63 D and 84% of patients had the visual acuity > or = 1.0. The average IOP in "ECCE & IOL & T" group was 2.78 kPa, astigmatism was 1.54 +/- 0.67 D and 67.5% of patients had the visual acuity > or = 1.0 after three months of the operations. The difference was significant (P < 0.05). There was no severe complications in "Phaco & IOL & T" group while there was 9 cases with flat filtration pad in "ECCE & IOL & T" group.
Conclusions: The method of "Phaco & IOL & T" is more efficient and safe than that of "ECCE & IOL & T". It should be the first consideration in the management of glaucoma with cataract.
