The treatment of facial nerve palsy related to cholesteatoma otitis media

Abstract

Objective: In order to investigate the operative treatment of facial nerve palsy which induced by cholesteatoma otitis media.

Methods: To analyse 35 postoperative cases with of cholesteatoma otitis media to accompany peripheral facial paralysis. Opened technique was performed in 32 cases, closed technique was performed in 3 cases. All of them were performed facial nerve decompression.

Results: In opened technique group, the effect of postoperation reached House-Brackmann I-II degree in 24 patients (24/32), House-Brackmann III-V degree in 8 patients. In closed technique group, 2 patients reached House-Brackmann II degree, but they recoveryed slowly.

Conclusions: Facial nerve decompression should be performed as long as the diagnosis was made, Mastoidectomy by using opened technique has satisfactory therapeutic effect.
