Learn About Biliary Hypoplasia

What is the definition of Biliary Hypoplasia?
Biliary hypoplasia is a congenital abnormality that occurs when an infant is born with a decreased number of small bile ducts that transfer bile between the lobes of the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine. In infants with biliary hypoplasia, there may be fewer small bile ducts than normal, or they may be completely absent. Biliary hypoplasia is a condition most often found in individuals with Alagille syndrome (a genetic disorder that affects major organs of the body).
What are the symptoms of Biliary Hypoplasia?
Symptoms of biliary hypoplasia in infants may include persistent jaundice (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes), dark urine, pale stool, enlarged liver, and progressive biliary cirrhosis (scaring and fibrosis of bile ducts).
