Learn About Congenital Mitral Malformation

What is the definition of Congenital Mitral Malformation?
Congenital mitral malformation refers to various mitral valve abnormalities that are present at birth. The mitral valve is made of leaf-like flaps and is situated between the upper left chamber (atrium) and lower left chamber (ventricle) of the heart. There are three main types of mitral valve abnormalities: 1) mitral valve prolapse (when one or both mitral valve flaps do not close properly), 2) mitral valve regurgitation (when the mitral valve does not close and allows blood to leak back into the left atrium from the left ventricle), and 3) mitral valve stenosis (when the mitral valve becomes narrow or tight). Many individuals born with mitral valve malformations also have other heart defects.
What are the symptoms of Congenital Mitral Malformation?
Some individuals with congenital mitral malformation may not have any symptoms, or the symptoms may occur later in life. When symptoms of congenital mitral malformation occur, these may include fatigue upon exertion, chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing, rapid breathing, bluish or greyish color of the skin, lips, and fingernails (cyanosis), trouble eating or gaining weight (failure to thrive), swelling of body tissue or organs, abnormal heart rhythms, such as palpitations or other arrhythmias, pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure), and heart failure.

What are the current treatments for Congenital Mitral Malformation?
Treatment for congenital mitral malformation depends on how severe the condition may be and whether or not the individual is experiencing symptoms. While some patients with congenital mitral malformation may only need monitoring, others may need surgical repair or replacement of the mitral valve. Some patients with congenital mitral malformation may need to undergo balloon valvuloplasty to open the mitral valve.
