Learn About Coronary Artery Fistula

What is the definition of Coronary Artery Fistula?
Coronary artery fistula (abnormal opening or connection) is a rare condition usually present at birth (congenital) in which there is an opening between one of the coronary arteries and another blood vessel or a chamber of the heart. This abnormal opening can affect the blood flow to the heart and cause dilation of the coronary artery. Infants born with coronary artery fistula often also have other heart defects. Coronary artery fistula can also develop after birth from an infection, heart surgery, or an injury.
What are the symptoms of Coronary Artery Fistula?
Coronary artery fistula often does not have any symptoms, especially in infants. Symptoms of coronary artery fistula in a child may include fatigue, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or pain, irregular or rapid heartbeat, heart murmur, failure to thrive, and delayed growth.

What are the current treatments for Coronary Artery Fistula?
Treatment for coronary artery fistula depends on its size and whether it is causing symptoms. Small coronary artery fistulas may not cause any symptoms and may close on their own without any treatment. Large coronary fistulas in infants are treated with either catheter embolization with coil placement or surgery to close the abnormal opening.
