What is the definition of Hyperlipoproteinemia Type 4?
Hyperlipoproteinemia Type IV, also known as carbohydrate-inducible hyperlipemia, is a condition in which an individual has high levels of very low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides (types of fat) in their blood. High levels of very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides can cause atherosclerosis, or the build-up of plaques of fatty cholesterol in the artery walls, which can lead to heart disease or stroke. Hyperlipoproteinemia Type IV is believed to occur in individuals who have a genetic predisposition for the disease and from consuming carbohydrates and alcohol.
What are the symptoms of Hyperlipoproteinemia Type 4?
Hyperlipoproteinemia may not cause any symptoms or may cause hypertriglyceridemic waist, which is an elevated waist circumference (>90 cm in men or >85 cm in women).
