Learn About Invertebral Disc Disease

What is the definition of Invertebral Disc Disease?
Intervertebral disc disease, also known as degenerative disc disease, is a condition in which the one or more of the discs that cushion and absorb pressure between the vertebrae of the spine degenerate and cause pain. Intervertebral disc disease may lead to curvature of the spine (adult scoliosis), herniated disc, spinal stenosis (narrowing), and slipped discs (spondylolisthesis). Intervertebral disc disease is a part of aging and is common in older adults.
What are the symptoms of Invertebral Disc Disease?
Symptoms of intervertebral disc disease depend on the type and affected discs. The most common symptom of intervertebral disc disease is periodic or chronic pain in the neck or back. The pain may increase when bending, twisting the body, sitting, or lifting. Herniated intervertebral discs can press on the spinal nerves and cause pain that runs down the leg (sciatica), weakness, and numbness in the back or legs. Degenerated intervertebral discs may also cause the growth of bone spurs (osteophytes) at their edges that pinch the spinal nerves, causing weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, and bladder and bowel control problems. A completely degenerated intervertebral disc may cause permanent nerve damage and impaired movement.
