Learn About Monkeypox

What is the definition of Monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a rare viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus. The monkeypox virus is in the same family of viruses that cause smallpox. However, an infection with monkeypox is usually milder than smallpox.
What are the causes of Monkeypox?
Monkeypox can be contracted through skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or their body fluids, breathing in the virus through face-to-face contact, through sexual contact, touching items that were used by an infected person, from maternal-to-infant transmission during pregnancy, and bites from infected animals.
What are the symptoms of Monkeypox?
Symptoms of monkeypox usually appear three weeks after exposure to the virus. Symptoms of monkeypox vary by individual and can be mild to severe. Symptoms of monkeypox may include a rash that looks like pimples or blisters, headache, fatigue, fever, sore throat, nasal congestion, cough, chills, muscle aches, backache, and swollen lymph nodes. The rash may appear on the genitals, anus, mouth, face, chest, and hands. The pimples or blisters may be painful and itchy. The rash progresses to scabs before healing. Individuals with monkeypox remain contagious to others until all the scabs have completely healed, usually within two-to-four weeks.
